In small groups, we waded out toward the water-filled craters scattered across the beach: tide pools layered with dense eel grass that looked like rolling emerald fields in the high midday sun. I scoured the tide pools, searching for tidewater sculpin: small, bottom-feeding fish characterized by their sharp, ridged fins and an uncanny camouflage.
