Tamara S. Galanter
Partner at Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger LLP

“Getting young people to appreciate the outdoors and understand the science behind nature is the way to ensure the preservation of our incredible natural resources. If the younger generation cares, then they’ll work to make sure parks, trees, and clean beaches are here for their children.” —Tamara S. Galanter

Tamara, who has dedicated her life to protecting and enjoying the wonder of nature, took time during a recent hike in the San Bruno Mountains to share why she is passionate about supporting NatureBridge.

“Supporting NatureBridge is a natural extension of my interests and work. Whenever I can be, I’m outside biking, hiking, or just sitting and enjoying the sounds of the birds and the feel of the sun streaming through the trees. Even though I spend most days inside as an environmental attorney, I have the opportunity to work for park districts, land trusts, and environmental groups to save open space and agricultural land, and to keep our air and water clean.

“I donate to NatureBridge because they take youth beyond the classroom and into nature for hands-on learning. I especially appreciate that NatureBridge serves all kids—not just the children who are able to visit Yosemite and other national parks with their parents, but also the urban kids that have never seen a rainforest, a waterfall, a bird’s nest, or a meadow full of wildflowers.

“My own sons participated in NatureBridge’s program in Yosemite, and I saw how they learned the science of nature and were inspired by the beauty of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls. Now in their 20s, they're both activists with an appreciation of our natural world and motivation to protect it.

“I wanted to see the program for myself, so one sunny spring morning I visited the Golden Gate campus and met NatureBridge Director Aaron Rich. He introduced me to what the kids do in the labs, and what they learn as they hike the trails in the Marin Headlands. I am impressed and inspired."

Derek Jernstedt
Executive Director of Quest and HEDCO Foundations

“Teachers know that the program helps improve students’ interest in science, test scores, curiosity, and leadership skills. The students look forward to their NatureBridge trip all year. They hear about it from other kids, and it’s a true highlight of their education.” — Derek Jernstedt

Derek Jernstedt, executive director of both the Quest Foundation and HEDCO Foundation, knows the impact of NatureBridge programs. The Quest Foundation has funded fifth-grade students from Think College Now, an Oakland school, to attend NatureBridge’s program at our Golden Gate campus.

“The NatureBridge trip is a part of Think College Now’s core science curriculum,” Derek says. “The teachers know that the program helps improve the students’ interest in science, test scores, curiosity, and leadership skills. The students look forward to their NatureBridge trip all year. They hear about it from other kids, and it’s a true highlight of their education.”

Derek joined Think College Now at our Golden Gate campus in January 2011 and was so inspired by the experience that Quest Foundation now funds NatureBridge directly. Derek is excited to deepen his relationship with NatureBridge and help more students like those at Think College Now have transformative experiences in national parks. Derek’s advice: “Go and see the kids learning out in nature, learning about their environment.”
