Mission

Headlands Institute is dedicated to teaching science and environmental education in nature's classroom to inspire a personal connection to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it.

Our Impact

  • Founded in 1977, each year Headlands Institute serves more than 20,000 people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Our programs are designed to support state educational standards and to develop tomorrow's community leaders.
  • Approximately 40% of participating schools have attended Headlands Institute for at least 15 years.
  • Headlands Institute is an official educational partner of the National Park Service through its parent organization NatureBridge.

Our Operations

  • We provide scholarships to 30% of students participating in our youth and school programs.
  • We have 57 employees.

Awards Received

  • In 2008, Headlands Institute was honored by the Sierra Club with the Hannah Creighton Environmental Justice Award for “fantastic integrated environmental and social-responsibility programs serving young people from all walks of life.”
  • Headlands Institute, through its parent organization NatureBridge, received the 2004 California Governor's Award for Environmental and Economic Leadership in Children's Education.
  • Marin County has honored Headlands Institute as a Green Business.  This certification recognizes Headlands Institute for conserving energy, water, and materials; preventing pollution and waste generation; and sharing environmentally sound practices with other businesses.
