Summer 2010 - Partnering Up for Fun!
Every September, after Coastal Camp ends and the campers have returned to school, a hush falls over the camp office...but just for a second! Within weeks, I get to work dreaming up new camp themes and activities for the following summer that I hope will get campers excited to return to camp. And lucky for me, there is never a lack of inspiration here in the Headlands.
The Marin Headlands is, without a doubt, an inspiring place to work. To be able to leave the city every morning, travel across a world famous bridge, through a valley of rolling hills, past horses, rabbits, deer, and coyotes and end up at the beach is a welcomed commute.
I am not just inspired by the natural resources this park. I am excited by the brilliant people and vibrant organizations that create innovative park partnerships here in the Headlands.
This summer, Coastal Camp has teamed up with our amazing park partners to offer two new camp sessions. In partnership with The Marine Mammal Center, we have created Seal Scouts, a camp all about fin-footed marine mammals. I can't wait to visit the marine mammal hospital with the campers and hear the kids giggle at the boisterous sea lions barking in their pens or head out to Rodeo Beach with nets in hand to practice a mock Harbor Seal rescue.
While all the camp sessions are near and dear to
my heart, I must confess, I am
most excited about Art Expedition, in partnership with Headlands Center for the Arts. This camp is the perfect blending of field science and artisitc expression. I look forward to following the campers into the field with sketchbook in hand to practice field sketching tecniques and build our observation skills. Campers will even get to hike over to Headlands Center for the Arts and work with an artist to create a collaborative stop-motion animation film.
I can't wait for the fun to begin, the countdown til summer has begun. Only 4 months and 3 weeks to go!
