Certified Green Business
Headlands Institute is a Certified Bay Area Green Business.
As an environmental nonprofit, we seek to reduce our ecological footprint and to model thoughtful business practices to our participants and community.
Sustainable Practices
Our staff is continuously looking for new methods to improve our environmental bottom line. Our sustainable practices include:
- Serving local and organic foods whenever possible
- Using electric vehicles to make deliveries on campus
- Shifting to environmentally friendly safe, non-toxic cleaning supplies
- Composting participant food scraps and kitchen waste
- Cooking with whole foods rather than pre-packaged foods
- Using minimal paper products in our conference programs
- Installing low flow toilets for a savings of 30,000 gallons of water annually
- Using LED and compact fluorescent light bulbs
- Installing carpets made from recycled plastic bottles
Environmental Awards
Our efforts to green our business have been recognized with the following awards:
- Governor's Award for Environmental and Economic Leadership through our parent organization, NatureBridge
- Marin County Sustainable Partners Award
- Bay Area Certified Green Business
"We want to be an example on a commercial level of what people can do on a personal level. Businesses like ours are creating demand on a commercial level, shifting the marketplace toward more organic, sustainable products."—Thomas Dreke, executive chef
"Sustainability has an influence on all of our daily practices. We are doing what we teach kids to do, just on a larger scale."—Sam Drucker, facilities manager
