Preparing Students

Properly preparing students for their trip to Headlands Institute helps students feel comfortable and allows them to get them to get as much as possible from their time in the Marin Headlands.  The following resources will help you prepare students for their trip.

Student Orientation Video: This video helps students know what to expect during their visit to Headlands Institute.  Learn more about the dorms, the food, and the hiking.

Pretrip visits: Free classroom visits before and after your trip by Headlands Institute educators help prepare students for their visit as well as reinforce learning from the trip. This service is offered free for schools within 50 miles of our campus.

Packing List: Let us help you prepare for your visit to the Headlands with our suggested packing list for hikes and overnight stays. (Spanish version)

Behavior Contract:  Our Behavior Contract explains Headlands Institute's simple rules and sets clear behavior expectations for all students participating in our programs.  We suggest you discuss the behavior expectations as a class.

Field Guide:  Our field guide is written by students for students.  Your students can learn about abiotic, biotic, and cultural aspects of the Marin Headlands or add their own information.  Reading or adding to the field guide makes a great pretrip activity!

The Marin Headlands: Learn more about the diverse habitats and fascinating history that make the Marin Headlands the ultimate classroom.

Mandala of the Seasons:  Use our Mandala of the Seasons to help students figure out what will be going on with the plants, animals, water and weather when you visit the Marin Headlands.
