Lesson Plans

students outside learning about the wilderness

We are committed to helping teachers ensure that participants' environmental education is not limited to the space of an Olympic Park visit. This means actively preparing students prior to our program and actively maintaining their engagement subsequently. To this end, we are happy to provide some pre- and post-trip curriculum suggestions for teachers to bring our inquiry-based, environmental education into the classroom.

If you're interested in further bringing Olympic Park Institute's teaching style into your classroom, you may also want to consider scheduling a pre- or post-trip classroom visit.

Pre-Trip classroom curriculum ideas

These are a few ideas of what you can do in the classroom to prepare students for their trip to Olympic Park Institute. The activities are set up according to the curriculum track you choose for your visit, and each suggestion is designed to help students become familiar with the concepts that will be taught while they attend our field science program. These activities range from familiarizing students with tree physiology to walking them through the basic process of scientific analysis. Prior to your trip it may also be helpful to consider our recommended reading for further teaching material.

Post-Trip classroom curriculum ideas

Our post-trip activities are designed to extend the information and experience that the students gained while visiting Olympic Park Institute. We offer a list of activities to choose from, such as mapping local watersheds or studying soil samples from around the school, each of which incorporates the concepts learned while participating in our field science program.
