Island ecology & conservation focused professional development in the Channel Islands for Southern California teachers.

June 2-3, 7:30 a.m. Saturday to 5 p.m. Sunday

  • Explore island ecology with hands-on lessons and activities
  • Hike and learn about conservation efforts in the Channel Islands
  • Experience tent-camping at Scorpion Campground, Santa Cruz Island

During this overnight two-day session in the Channel Islands, we will concentrate on island ecology and conservation of the Channel Islands, will include hiking and hands-on activities focused on increasing content knowledge. In addition, we will cover the human impact on island ecosystems, with an emphasis on the history of the Channel Islands.

Program includes:

  • All meals starting with lunch on Saturday and ending with lunch on Sunday
  • Overnight accommodations in large dome tents, plus showers and restrooms at the nearby Ranch House for Circle X Ranch.
  • Transportation to and from the Channel Islands (from Ventura Harbor - Island Packers)
  • The opportunity to explore nature's classroom

Professional development in the Santa Monica Mountains at Circle X Ranch.

Saturday, May 12, 2012, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Explore the Santa Monica Mountains with hands-on lessons and activities
  • Hike the Grotto trail with our education staff and learn natural history of the mediterranean climate
  • Snacks and lunch provided!

During this afternoon session at Circle X Ranch, we will explore the Santa Monica Mountains by hiking the Grotto trail.  Hands-on natural history lessons will focus on the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean climate.  In addition, we will cover geology and the formation of these mountains.
